A NOTE ON SOURCE AND WORDING

You have probably seen this passage attributed to Kahlil Gibran. It isn't his.

It was written by Edwin Hubbell Chapin (1814–1880), an American preacher known for his sermons on grief and endurance. It appears under his name in Josiah H. Gilbert's Dictionary of Burning Words of Brilliant Writers. The Gibran attribution entered circulation through later quotation collections and was cemented by quote websites — it has been repeated so widely that it now outnumbers the correct one.

You may also see the line printed as "seared with scars." We have used "seamed," the reading found in the earliest sources we could trace. A seam is what a scar is — the line where torn tissue has knit back together — and that was ordinary Victorian usage. "Seared with scars" mixes the metaphor: searing is what makes a scar, not something a scar does. Corruptions tend to drift from the precise word toward the dramatic one, rarely the reverse.
